UCLM Summit VI Empowers Community to Take Ownership along with Government Resources to Reduce Violence

The goal of the summit was to engage community members to take action around violence in the Rochester area. The two-day event set the stage for building a culture where law enforcement and the community:

·      Trust each other

·      See the humanity in each other

·      Work together to reduce violence and create more peaceful neighborhoods.

UCLM will be hosting more events and programs to maintain the good will demonstrated at the event and keep the momentum going. The first three events are:

§  The Law and Your Community – A workshop on enhanced communication tools aimed at better police engagement outcomes, presented by Rochester Police Department Deputy Chief Keith Stith.

§  Implementing Kingian Non-Violent Strategies and Interventions Training on conflict resolution based on the philosophy and strategies of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., presented by UCLM President Dr. Dwight Fowler, a certified instructor in Kingian Non-Violence.

§  Parents’ Voices: Stopping Violence in Schools – A moderated discussion between parents and community and law enforcement leaders where parents present their concerns, ideas and solutions.
